Winter weather triggers crashes in Logan County

Logan County Sheriff’s deputies responded to several weather-related crashes on Friday and Saturday, with icy/snowy road conditions being contributing factors.

Just before 8:30 a.m. Friday, a 2010 Honda CR-V driven by Devin Butler, 31, of Lakeview, was traveling on State Route 235 when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a road sign.

Butler was not injured and was cited for failure to control.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Moments later, a 2012 Honda Accord driven by Alexis Birt, 25, of Belle Center, was southbound on U.S. Route 68 in Bellefontaine when it rear-ended a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Roger Mertens, 43, of Belle Center.

Minor damage was reported to both vehicles.

No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued.

Later Friday, shortly before 5:30 p.m., a 2024 Acura MDX driven by Mickie Ebbeskotte, 53, of Bellefontaine, was traveling east on County Road 29 when the vehicle drove over a patch of ice.

Ebbeskotte lost control, traveled off the left side of the roadway, and struck a utility pole.

She was not injured and was cited for failure to control.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

On Saturday morning, just after 7:30 a.m., a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox driven by David Oakley, 62, of Bellefontaine, was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of County Road 13 and State Route 235.

A 2016 Honda HR-V driven by Wesley Leibold, 44, of Lewistown, was attempting to turn onto County Road 13 from State Route 235 when he struck the Equinox.

Both vehicles sustained minor damage, and no injuries were reported.

Leibold was cited for failure to control.

Later Saturday, just before 4:30 p.m., a 2006 Nissan Frontier driven by Shelby Kuhlenbeck, 36, of Lakeview, was southbound on State Route 235 in Lakeview when he failed to maintain control, traveled off the right side of the roadway, and struck a pole.

No injuries were reported.

The vehicle sustained minor damage, and Kuhlenbeck was cited for failure to control.

Then just after 5:00 p.m. Saturday, a 2020 Honda Accord driven by a 17-year-old female from Rushsylvania was traveling eastbound on State Route 273 when a 2016 Kia Soul driven by Egali Chirino, 72, of Bellefontaine, pulled from the stop sign at County Road 5 into the path of the Accord and was struck.

Chirino was cited for failure to control. No injuries were reported in the crash.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to slow down and use caution during winter weather conditions.
