The Benjamin Logan Board of Education met in regular session Monday night for their June meeting, where members of the Collins Writing Implementation Team shared updates on the district’s continued focus on strengthening student writing skills.
Benjamin Logan Middle School has just completed its second year of implementing the Collins Writing Program, a research-based approach designed to help students write clearly, think critically, and communicate effectively across all subject areas.
Thanks to the generous support of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, the program has brought measurable progress to both teaching and learning across grade levels.
Highlights from Year 2 include:
- Differentiated professional development tailored to teacher needs
- Individual and collaborative goal-setting with ongoing reflection
- In-class coaching and modeling of effective writing strategies
- Increased use of academic vocabulary and writing across the curriculum
- Continued focus on the Five Types of Writing to build fluency, accuracy, and depth
Educators report that the program is empowering students to express their ideas more clearly, use stronger academic language, and engage more confidently with content in all subjects.
In other board news, Superintendent John Scheu announced that the district will continue offering free admission to home athletic events for all students.
He reminded the board that any student in 6th grade or younger must be accompanied by an adult to attend.
The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for July 21 at 6:00 PM.
