The Bellefontaine Lady Chieftains 6th Grade Middle School softball team opened its 2026 season in impressive fashion, blanking the Urbana Hillclimbers 4–0 with a strong all-around performance.
Eliza Blinn led the way on the mound, delivering a dominant pitching outing to earn the season-opening win. Blinn struck out 12 batters while allowing just two hits, keeping the Hillclimbers off balance throughout the contest and preserving the shutout.
Offensively, Bellefontaine was powered by Emma Layman and Arianna Rumer, who each went 1-for-2 at the plate. Both players hit a double and drove in a run. Miley McKirahan and Joelle Eaton also contributed with hits, and Eaton added an RBI to round out the scoring.
Speed proved to be another key factor in the Lady Chieftains’ success. Eva Irick stole three bases, helping ignite the offense and put pressure on Urbana’s defense. In total, Bellefontaine recorded seven stolen bases in the game.
Defensively, the Lady Chieftains played a clean and confident game, backing up strong pitching with solid fielding to ensure the Hillclimbers never crossed the plate.
Bellefontaine will look to carry this momentum forward when they return to action on Monday evening, hosting Anna at Southview Park with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
