On Monday night at Ben Logan Soccer Stadium, Calvary Green and Bellefontaine Black faced off in the League Championship Game.
The Spartans entered into the game as the Undefeated Regular Season #1 seed with a 12-0 record.
It was a fierce battle under the lights.
A handball by Calvary allowed a penalty shot opportunity that put Bellefontaine up 3-2.
Chieftain players Eli Deal, Sam Jenkins, and Grady Graham each added a goal in the second half.
With 40 seconds left in the game, Aiden Keller sent in a fantastic corner kick that Elijah Navarro headed in for a score to tie the game at 3-3, which is how regulation ended.
For Calvary: Brody Prall had 16 saves and was helped out by Gavin Householder, Caleb Gantz, Reagan Roell, Alton Tighe, and Octavian Riblet on the defensive line. Lydia Davie, Xavier Church, and Aiden Keller handled midfield duties and Pinky Bender, Annagil Lambert, and Blythe Lowe put in quality minutes as well. Seth Palmer kept pace with the game at left forward sending in several crosses.
Bellefontaine’s defense, led by Jay Tuttle in goals, Lincoln Banta, Grady Feasel, Levi Hinshaw, Karsyn Newkirk, and Sloan Stolly, consistently held off a very skilled Calvary offense.
Bellefontaine was up 3-2 with only seconds left in the game, when Calvary scored off a corner kick to send the game into a shootout.
During the shootout, Bellefontaine goals were added by Jack Wilson and Don Smith to secure the championship title with a final score of 5-4.
Additional key players were Giana Davis, Layla Davis, Harrison Fissel, William Jenkins, Hudson Konz, and Mason Phillips.
The Chieftains ended their season with an 11-2 record and were coached by Mark Fissel, Jess Jenkins, Caleb Wilson, and Brian Deal.
The Spartans earned runner-up in a championship game that lived up to the hype.
Kole Gantz and Reagan Roell earned the Team Toughness Award for respective offensive and defensive play in a hard-fought physical game.
