The Bellefontaine girls tennis team competed against some of the top programs from the Miami Valley and Northwest District Saturday at the Schroeder Invitational in Tipp City, with the Chieftains finishing sixth out of eight teams with 18 points.
Lima Shawnee won the team championship with 39 points, followed by Tipp City with 33, Troy with 25, Chaminade Julienne with 22, Celina with 21, Bellefontaine with 18, Lehman Catholic with 11 and St. Mary’s with 11.
The highlight of the day for Bellefontaine came at first singles, where Mia Brown pulled off a major upset in the opening round.
Brown, who entered the tournament facing the top seed from Tipp City, battled her way to an 8-7 victory to advance. She followed that performance with an 8-5 win over Lehman Catholic, earning a spot in the championship match.
In the final, Brown faced Lima Shawnee and fell 8-2, finishing as the tournament runner-up and earning a second-place medal.
Rylee Crabtree also put together a strong tournament at second singles, finishing in fourth place.
At first doubles, Oriana Vasquez and Bella Barton finished sixth, while Olivia Warye placed seventh at third singles.
The Chieftains’ performance comes after Bellefontaine opened the season Thursday with a dominant 5-0 sweep of Lehman Catholic.
Bellefontaine will look to continue its strong start as the Chieftains return to action on the early-season schedule.
