The Benjamin Logan Raiders boys varsity soccer team clinched the Quest Cup championship on Friday night, overcoming Calvary Christian 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 tie in regulation.
The match began with a strong start for the Raiders. Carter Lyden deflected a throw-in from Landon Stoodt to give Benjamin Logan a 1-0 lead just 8 minutes into the game.
However, Calvary Christian equalized with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, scoring a header off a long free kick to make it 1-1.
The second half saw both teams battling fiercely, but neither could break the deadlock, leading to a penalty shootout.
In the shootout:
- Aiden Todd converted the first penalty for the Raiders.
- Liam Sweeney made a crucial save to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
- Ethan Miller then scored for the Raiders, with Calvary matching to make it 2-1.
- Eric Hughes calmly netted his penalty, and Sweeney made another save, pushing the Raiders to a 3-1 lead.
- Carter Lyden sealed the victory with a successful penalty, securing the championship for Benjamin Logan.
Although officially recorded as a 1-1 tie, the Raiders’ penalty shootout win marks their second consecutive Quest Cup title.
Coach Hughes commented on the victory, “I was really happy to see us step up and go 4/4 on PKs, and Liam made two great saves. It’s nice to get the title. Not to take anything away from Calvary because they played very well, but I really think we could have won the game in regulation to avoid the drama. We had a couple of really good opportunities that we didn’t convert and made a few too many mistakes that gave Calvary the chance for the result. We need to be better in the final third, but we will continue to work and look forward to traveling to Kenton next Thursday.”
