The Calvary Christian Spartans’ Boys Varsity basketball team defeated the Dayton Temple Christian Tigers to win the OVCC Championship title on Tuesday night, 38-32.
The win caps off a fantastic season for the Spartans who finished 16-1 in the conference.
The only loss for the Spartans came at the hands of the Tigers making the championship game an epic matchup.
Christian Rogan was the leading scorer for the game in the back-and-forth heated battle.
The Spartans trailed by 1 at the half, and by 3 at the end of the third quarter when Rogan hurled a 3-point buzzer-beater from the baseline.
The Spartans were down by 5 points with 5 minutes left in the game before Evan Patton hit 2 baskets turning the tide and advancing to victory.
Rogan totaled 11 points, including 3 shots from beyond the arc, and posted 1 rebound, 1 steal, and 2 assists.
Wyatt Schlatter and Zeeke Wylie scored 6 points a piece.
In addition, Schlatter pulled down 9 rebounds and had 3 steals and 1 assist while Wylie had 5 rebounds and 1 steal.
Also contributing were Patton, Philip Davie, and Luke Gaertner with 5 points each.
Patton also posted 6 rebounds, 1 steal, and 5 assists, while Davie posted 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist, and Gaertner had 1 rebound and 1 assist.
The JV Spartans capped off a great season by upsetting the Immaculate Conception Knights and winning the OVCC Championship.
The victory avenged the only conference loss of the season for the junior Spartans, who fell to the Knights 25-42 earlier in the season.
This time around the Calvary boys crushed the Knights, winning 55-30.
Leading the way for the Spartans was John Gaertner with 12 points and 2 rebounds.
Other key contributors were Christian Rogan with 9 points and 2 steals, Noah James with 8 points and 3 rebounds, and Evan Schmidt with 7 points and 2 steals.
Daniel Young and Nehemiah Dillon each netted 6 points.
Young also had 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 assists while Dillon posted 6 rebounds.
Rounding out the scoring for the Spartans was Brant Zell with 3 points and Fletcher Lambert and Abel Davie with 2 points apiece.
