The Lady Chieftains 7th/8th grade softball team opened their season Sunday, March 29th with a thrilling, back-and-forth contest that wasn’t decided until the final inning, as they fell just short 11–10.
Despite the loss, the Chieftains put together an impressive performance on both sides of the ball, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive resilience. The game remained tight throughout, with neither team backing down before Northwestern ultimately pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Offensively, the Lady Chieftains were aggressive and effective, finishing with 10 hits and an impressive 12 stolen bases. Skylar Rutherford led the charge with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a double, while also swiping three bases.
Several other players contributed key hits in the effort. Alivia Owens went 2-for-3 with a triple and a stolen base, while Joelle Eaton added a 2-for-3 performance that included a double, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Leigha Canter chipped in with a hit and an RBI, and Jocelyn Myers recorded a double and drove in a run. Sophia Pulfer also added a hit to help power the offense.
On the basepaths, the Chieftains’ speed was on full display. In addition to Rutherford’s three steals, contributions came from Aleigha Dixon, Me’lah Conklin, Ellie Irick, and others, keeping constant pressure on the Northwestern defense.
Defensively, the team turned in a solid effort, committing just two errors while facing a tough Northwestern lineup. In the circle, Joelle Eaton and Alivia Owens split pitching duties, combining for four strikeouts and keeping the game within reach throughout.
While the result didn’t go their way, the Lady Chieftains showed plenty of promise in their season opener, demonstrating the kind of effort and execution that could lead to success as the season moves forward.
