Hillclimbers, Cardinals kick off season at Urbana Invitational

Urbana and Triad saw strong performances in both teams’ debut track meet of the season at the Urbana Invitational.

Urbana Boys

The throwing squad got Urbana started early, with Lucas Flora placing second in both discus and shot put. Pryce Bass placed second in the 100-meter dash, with Giovani Torres finishing third just behind him. In distance events, senior Vincent Lightle placed first in both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Zachary Nutt placed third in the 1600, and Micah King finished second in the 3200, adding valuable points to Urbana’s total. Overall, the Urbana boys placed 2nd.

Urbana Girls

On the track, Urbana’s Brylee Spriggs and Marleigh Long finished second and third in the 100- and 110-meter hurdles. In the girls 4×200-meter relay, Urbana placed second. Olivia MacKendrick led the Lady Hillclimbers, taking first in both the 400- and 800-meter races. Avery Smith added a third-place finish in the 3200. Overall, the Urbana girls secured 3rd place.

Triad Boys

Triad scored big in field events thanks to first- and third-place finishes in the long jump by Devon Minor and Brooklyn Melidor. Kimber Instine placed second in the high jump, while Cohen Millice took third. On the track, Devon Minor dominated the 100- and 110-meter hurdles. Overall, Triad’s boys finished 4th, highlighted by standout performances from Devon Minor.

Triad Girls

Triad’s Avery Eaton dominated the hurdles and earned four medals in her first high school meet. In field events, Brooklyn Melidor earned third in the long jump, and Kimber Instine placed second in the high jump. In the girls 4×200 relay, Triad finished just behind Urbana. Overall, the Triad girls team finished 5th.
