The Urbana Hillclimbers picked up a 3-1 win over the Calvary Christian Lady Spartans Thursday night in the Spartans’ home opener at McKinley Fields.
Urbana opened the scoring in the 28th minute when senior Lola Rice found the back of the net on a deep shot.
Calvary Christian’s defense kept the Spartans within striking distance, with Reagan Roell, Sarah King, Caroline Moore and Scout Andre helping anchor the back line.
The Spartans eventually found the equalizer with less than 15 minutes remaining. Lilliana Phillips sent a cross into the box from the right side, and Jenna Palmer finished the play to make it 1-1.
Urbana quickly answered. Just two minutes later, senior Olivia Mackendrick delivered a well-placed free kick to put the Hillclimbers back in front, 2-1.
Urbana added an insurance goal with seven minutes remaining when senior Addie Hegyi scored to give the Hillclimbers a 3-1 advantage.
Calvary Christian goalkeeper Lydia Davie finished with nine saves in the loss.
Senior Mak Kariuki provided an offensive threat for the Spartans, recording several shots on goal as Calvary Christian continued to look for another opportunity to cut into the Urbana lead.
The Hillclimbers held on for the 3-1 victory.
The loss drops Calvary Christian to 0-4 on the season, while Urbana improves to 2-0.
The Spartans will be back on the road September 5 when they travel to Coldwater. Urbana will travel to North Union Monday for its next match.
