Urbana 17, Greeneview 4 (5 innings)
Urbana wasted no time taking control and never let up, rolling past Greeneview 17-4 in a run-rule win on the road.
The Lady Hillclimbers came out hot in the first. Chloe Easterday worked a leadoff walk and Addie Fox followed with a single. After the bases were loaded, the first run came home on a grounder that forced a throwing error, and Lillian Webb delivered a two-RBI single to center to make it 3-0.
Urbana kept piling it on in the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Bailee Packer ripped a two-run single down the left field line, and another error off the bat of Morgan Boyd brought two more across to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Both teams traded runs in the third. Easterday doubled in a run and Morgan Hoffman added an RBI single, while Greeneview got on the board with the help of an error and a double. That made it 9-2 after three.
The Hillclimbers blew things wide open in the fourth with a seven-run explosion. Maley Pine doubled to push Urbana into double digits, later scoring on a double steal. An error off the bat of Isla Wooten added another, and Hoffman came through again with a two-RBI single. A sac fly from Packer and an RBI single from Boyd capped the massive inning.
Greeneview added one in the fourth, and both teams traded runs in the fifth, but the run rule was already in motion as Urbana closed it out 17-4.
Hoffman led the charge, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Packer matched her with three RBIs of her own. Easterday, Fox, and Boyd each added two hits as Urbana racked up hits up and down the lineup.
Urbana improves to 6-3 and will host Jonathan Alder on Monday.
NEWTON CLASSIC
Tri-Village 16, Indian Lake 5 (6 innings) – Game 1
Indian Lake opened play at the Newton Classic with a tough 16-5 run-rule loss to Tri-Village, as a massive sixth inning proved to be the difference.
The Patriots struck first with a run-scoring single and a two-RBI double in the opening frame to take a 3-0 lead.
Indian Lake answered right back over the next two innings. Kyler Carruthers launched a two-out solo homer in the second, and MacKenzie Miller followed with a two-run blast in the third to tie the game at three.
Both teams settled in briefly before Tri-Village erupted in the sixth, scoring 13 runs. The inning featured a barrage of hits—including a grand slam and a two-run homer—along with walks and defensive miscues that allowed the Patriots to break things wide open.
Izzi Mackesy homered and Lillian Strauser swiped home to add runs for the Lakers, but the deficit held as the run rule ended it.
Strauser led Indian Lake with a 2-for-2 day, while the long balls from Carruthers and Miller highlighted the offense.
Indian Lake fell to 3-6 heading into game two of the day.
Indian Lake 10, Newton 3 – Game 2
The Lady Lakers bounced back in game two, putting together a strong all-around performance in a 10-3 win over Newton.
MacKenzie Miller set the tone immediately, blasting a leadoff homer on the first pitch of the game. Izzi Mackesy and Lillian Strauser followed with doubles to make it 2-0 after one.
Indian Lake added four more in the second. Miller drove in a run with a single, an error off the bat of Payton Davis brought another home, and Mackesy came through with a two-RBI single to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Newton got one back in the third on a sac fly, but the Lakers answered in the fourth. Davis added a sac fly and a passed ball allowed another run to score, making it 8-1.
Mackesy picked up another RBI with a double in the sixth, and Carruthers capped the scoring with a solo homer as Indian Lake secured the win and a split.
Mackesy and Miller each went 3-for-4, with Mackesy driving in three and Miller adding two RBIs. Eight different Lakers recorded a hit in the win.
Indian Lake wraps up the weekend at 4-6 and will face North Union on Monday.
Newton 14, Riverside 3 (5 innings) – Game 1
Riverside dropped its first game at the Newton Classic, falling 14-3 to the host Indians in a run-rule contest.
The Lady Pirates jumped out early when Emilee Robinson blasted a two-run homer in the first to give Riverside a 2-0 lead.
Newton answered with a run in the first, then tied it in the second before breaking things open. A string of two-out hits—including multiple singles and a double—pushed the Indians ahead 6-2 after two.
The game got out of hand in the third, as Newton erupted for eight runs behind a mix of RBI hits, a bases-loaded walk, and defensive miscues to take a 14-2 lead.
Riverside added one more on an Emma Pope bases-loaded groundout, but the run rule brought it to a close.
Robinson led the offense with two hits, including the early homer.
Riverside fell to 7-6 heading into game two.
Tri-Village 14, Riverside 4 (6 innings) – Game 2
Riverside couldn’t recover in game two, dropping a 14-4 run-rule decision to Tri-Village to wrap up the day.
The Lady Pirates struck first, as Keira Manahan singled and Chloe Purtee reached on a bunt, allowing Manahan to move to third. Robinson brought her home with a groundout to give Riverside a 1-0 lead.
Tri-Village answered quickly and took control from there. The Patriots scored two in the first, then added three more in the second with a mix of doubles and singles to build a 5-1 lead.
They kept adding on in the fourth, scoring four runs to extend the advantage to 9-1.
Riverside showed life in the fifth, scoring three runs with two outs. Ellie Zwiebel drew a bases-loaded walk, and Emma Strayer followed with a two-RBI single to cut into the deficit.
However, Tri-Village responded again, reaching double digits in the fifth and sealing the run rule with a four-run sixth.
Manahan led the offense with two hits, while Strayer drove in a pair.
Riverside ends the weekend at 7-7 and will prepare for Milton-Union on Monday.
Northwestern 13, West Liberty-Salem 2 (5 innings)
West Liberty-Salem couldn’t keep pace with a fast-starting Northwestern squad, falling 13-2 in a run-rule loss.
The Warriors jumped ahead early with a two-RBI double in the first, then broke things open in the second. With the bases loaded, Northwestern used a combination of RBI singles, groundouts, and another double to push the lead to 8-0.
The Tigers responded in the bottom of the second. After a pair of errors put runners on, Kaylee Blair delivered an RBI single, and later in the inning Karlee Lucas drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run.
Northwestern continued to add on with a run in the third, three more in the fourth, and another in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
West Liberty-Salem had baserunners in each of the final three innings but couldn’t string together another rally.
Ashlyn Yeater led the Tigers with two hits, including a double.
WL-S falls to 4-6 and will return to action Friday on the road at Southeastern.
Even after the loss, the Tigers participated in Youth Day at the ballpark.
