The Indian Lake Lakers are gearing up for an exciting new football season after a dramatic turnaround last year. Under Coach Jonn Rapp, who is entering his fourth season as head coach, the Lakers surged from a 1-9 record to an impressive 7-4 and a playoff appearance. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, they face new challenges and high expectations.
Key Player Departures and Replacements
One of the biggest questions heading into the season is who will fill the roles left by last season’s standout performers, Burke Lillard, the team’s leading passer and rusher. The Lakers have tapped Burke’s younger brother, Madden, to take over as the starting quarterback. Madden, who gained valuable experience as a backup last season, is expected to lead the offense with confidence, according to Rapp.
A more pressing concern for Rapp is replacing the entire starting offensive line, which graduated last spring. Junior Franklin Kinney, the most experienced returning lineman, will anchor one of the new positions. Junior Cy Cummins, who has previously played linebacker, will also be a key player on the line. Coach Rapp praised Cummins for his high energy and strong work ethic. Other candidates for the offensive line include Czar Dickson, Will Beelman, Aaron Rapp, and Keaton Yohey.
Strengths and Depth
On the offensive side, the Lakers boast considerable depth at wide receiver. All five of last season’s top receivers are returning. Quest Clay, Brodey Reisinger, Tristan Shoffner, and Bryce Burton combined for over 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2023. Madden Lillard, who will be focusing on quarterback this season, contributed 24 receptions and four touchdowns last year.
Defensively, the Lakers return seven starters from the previous season. Junior Noah Shirk, who recorded 109 tackles last year, is expected to be a key leader on defense. Rapp has been impressed with the defensive unit’s progress during the preseason camp.
