Lady Chiefs open tournament play with emphatic win, Pirates fall in opener

The Bellefontaine Lady Chieftains kicked off tournament play in dominant fashion Tuesday night at Xenia High School, sweeping Ponitz in straight sets: 25-5, 25-9, 25-1.

Senior setter Madi Zedeker led the Chieftains with a standout all-around performance, going a perfect 24-for-24 from the service line with five aces, while dishing out 37 assists and adding seven digs.

Outside hitter Kelsi Snapp was unstoppable at the net, racking up 21 kills.

She also contributed five digs defensively and tallied four aces at the service line.

Kaeleigh Flora and Ava Layman each contributed eight kills, with Layman also adding five digs.

Alayna Boyd, Presley Vigansky, and Ari Rangel combined for four kills, while Jillian Ullom turned in a strong serving performance, going 7-for-8 with an ace.

With the victory, Bellefontaine improves to 17-6 on the season and advances to the second round of tournament play.

The Chieftains will face Butler on Monday, October 20, at Xenia High School, with first serve at 7 p.m.

In other tournament action, Riverside opened postseason play Wednesday at Newton, falling to Fort Recovery in straight sets, 25-12, 25-7, 25-9.
