The Riverside Pirates are poised for another compelling season as they prepare to defend their Three Rivers Conference title and make a strong playoff push. After an impressive finish to the 2023 season, which saw them win nine games in a row, claim the conference championship, and make a playoff appearance, the Pirates are ready to face the new challenges ahead.
Head Coach Bryce Hodge enters his sixth season with the Pirates, focusing on maintaining the team’s momentum despite significant roster changes due to graduation. The team’s core strength lies in its experienced senior class, which includes fourteen players ready to step into critical roles.
Quarterback Gavin Orsborne will lead the charge on offense. After taking over late last season when Myles Platfoot was injured, Orsborne demonstrated his capabilities by throwing for nearly 700 yards, 8 touchdowns, and completing 61% of his passes. As the established starter, Orsborne will be key in orchestrating the Pirates’ offense.
Orsborne talks about the upcoming season:
The backfield will feature Tony Robinson, Houston Anderson, and Grady Jenkins, who will support Orsborne and drive the ground game.
The receiving corps is well-experienced, with seniors Landon Purtee, Damien Smith, and Brice Kauffman returning. The trio combined for over 400 yards and three touchdowns last season, offering a reliable target for Orsborne.
The offensive line, although needing to replace three starters, benefits from returning seniors like Travis Brooks and Jorden Dunham. Seniors Aiden Manning, Mason Armbruster, and Braylon Dunn, along with freshman Drew Wilson, will play pivotal roles. Coach Hodge acknowledges that developing the necessary chemistry for the line will be a work in progress, but the existing bond among the players is expected to facilitate a smooth transition.
Brooks on the season:
Defensively, the Pirates face the task of replacing six starters. However, the return of All-State linebacker Braylon Dunn provides a significant boost. Dunn’s leadership and experience will be crucial in integrating new defensive players and maintaining the unit’s high performance. Last season, Riverside’s defense was the top-rated unit in the conference, and Dunn’s presence will be instrumental in addressing the challenges of this season.
The Pirates will kick off their 2024 campaign by hosting Ansonia on August 23rd. As they embark on this new season, Riverside aims to build on their previous success and navigate the challenges of a fresh roster with a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talent. Fans and supporters can look forward to an exciting season filled with anticipation and potential.
