The local junior high football season got underway Tuesday with a pair of strong performances, as Riverside rolled to a 36-0 shutout of Dayton Christian and Graham rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat Covington 14-0.
Riverside 36, Dayton Christian 0
The Riverside Pirates opened the season Tuesday with a dominant 36-0 victory over Dayton Christian, showing toughness and teamwork on both sides of the football.
Charlie Varian led Riverside defensively with two interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. He also found the end zone on offense, joining Coy Yelton, Preston Burchett and Khai Johnson as Pirates to score touchdowns.
The Riverside defense continued to battle throughout the game, with Jacob Wren, Jayce Clerico and Ralphie Robinson making key stops. The defensive line and linebackers helped the Pirates shut out Dayton Christian and close out the victory.
With a 24-player roster, Riverside emphasized teamwork and giving every player an opportunity to contribute in the season opener.
Graham 14, Covington 0
The Graham Falcons opened their season with a 14-0 victory over Covington on Tuesday, scoring both of their touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Wally Sothard scored on an 11-yard run, while Gabe Maurice added a 19-yard touchdown run to give Graham the win.
Grady Thomas led the Falcons’ defense with two interceptions. Hunter Lawson and Maurice each recovered a fumble, while Sothard added a sack late in the game.
Graham will return home Wednesday, September 9, when the Falcons host Bellefontaine.
