Spartans extend win streak to three over Eagles, WL-S battles Urbana

Area soccer teams were in action over the weekend, with impressive wins from Calvary Christian and both West Liberty-Salem boys’ squads, while the WLS girls fell short in a tough home matchup against Urbana.

Spartans Extend Win Streak to Three

The Calvary Christian Spartans continued their strong run of form Friday night with a dominant 5–1 victory over the Middletown Christian Eagles, marking their third consecutive win.

Senior Nehemiah Dillon led the way with two goals, displaying excellent finishing ability throughout the match. Sophomore Aiden Keller, junior Ransom Lambert, and sophomore Seth Palmer each found the back of the net to round out a well-balanced offensive performance.

The Spartans also showed strong ball movement, with senior Trent Comer and senior Evan Schmidt contributing assists. Schmidt recorded two assists on the night, further fueling Calvary’s attack. The Spartans now look ahead to their next matchup on Monday, October 6, when they take on Jackson Center.

WLS Boys Sweep Urbana

The West Liberty-Salem boys’ varsity and junior varsity teams both earned victories Saturday afternoon on the road against Urbana.

The varsity squad edged Urbana 2–1 in a tightly contested match. Conner Leichty and Elijah Christison each scored for the Tigers, while assists came from Wyatt Longaberger and Lance Campbell. In goal, Tucker Searles made eight saves to preserve the win.

The victory brings the Tigers’ record to 12-2-1. They will host West Jefferson on Monday at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Night.

The JV team closed out their season with a dominant 7–0 win over Urbana. Bo Miller led the Tigers with a hat trick, while Everett Brooks, Tyler Hershberger, and Josiah Thoman each added a goal. Eli Jones recorded two assists, and Rylan Leichty, Landon Zanfirov, Jerome Cordrey, and Thoman each tallied an assist as well. Cordrey also notched three saves in goal.

The JV team finishes its season with a 5-4-1 record.

WLS Girls Fall to Urbana at Home

The West Liberty-Salem girls’ varsity soccer team faced a tough opponent Saturday, falling 5–1 to Urbana at home. Kaylee Powell scored the lone goal for the Tigers off an assist from Jenna Cline. In goal, Kaylee Blair made six saves, and Ella Jacobs added three more.

The loss brings the Tigers’ overall record to 4-9-1 and 3-3 in conference play. WLS will have a chance to bounce back on Monday evening when they host West Jefferson for Senior Night. Pre-game festivities are set to begin at 4:45 p.m., with kickoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
