The local soccer season continued Thursday with West Liberty-Salem girls and Bellefontaine boys both taking the field.
West Liberty-Salem Girls
West Liberty-Salem opened its home schedule with a strong Ohio Heritage Conference victory Thursday, shutting out Northeastern 5-0.
Ellery Wygal, Jenna Cline, Arianna Weaver, Emily King and Lilly Yeater each scored for the Tigers.
Cline also recorded an assist, helping West Liberty-Salem build its five-goal offensive attack.
Ella Jacobs and Ashlyn Yeater combined for the shutout in goal, keeping Northeastern off the scoreboard throughout the match.
The victory puts the Tigers at 1-1 overall and 1-0 in OHC play.
West Liberty-Salem will return to action Tuesday with another conference matchup at home against Fairbanks. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Bellefontaine Boys
Bellefontaine battled Springfield to a 2-2 draw Thursday, leaving the Chieftains with a 0-0-2 record to start the season.
Jack Wilson put Bellefontaine on the board in the 30th minute, scoring off an assist from Ethan Turner.
Springfield answered before halftime to make it 1-1.
Grady Graham then gave the Chieftains the lead by converting a penalty kick in the second half, but Springfield responded with another goal to even the match at 2-2.
Bellefontaine head coach Steve Henry said he felt the game was winnable, but Springfield came out with more energy in the second half and took advantage of its opportunities.
Henry said the Chieftains have the tools to win and need to focus for the full 80 minutes. He added that the team will continue working until everything clicks, which he believes is not far away.
Bellefontaine’s junior varsity team picked up a 1-0 win over Springfield. Laikyn Board scored the lone goal, while Jacob Orozco and Haydon Argabright combined for the shutout.
The Chieftains will return to action Monday, August 24, at Urbana.
