Bellefontaine boys and Benjamin Logan girls soccer were both in action Monday night, with the Lady Chiefs falling to Urbana while the Lady Raiders opened their season with a convincing win over North Union.
Urbana 3, Bellefontaine 0 (boys)
Bellefontaine fell to Urbana 3-0 in a Central Buckeye Conference matchup.
Urbana scored with 18 minutes remaining in the first half before adding another goal with eight minutes left to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Hillclimbers added their final goal with 16 minutes remaining in the second half to complete the shutout.
Bellefontaine head coach Steven Henry said Urbana’s skill and physicality made the matchup difficult, particularly early in the game.
“Urbana is always a tough place to play. They are skilled and physical and that seemed to set us back a little. Eventually we responded, but the damage had already been done.”
Henry said the Chiefs were not outmatched but need to continue learning how to adjust during games.
“I don’t feel that we were outclassed at all. We just need to learn to adjust to the game.”
The loss moves the Chiefs to 0-1-2 on the season.
Bellefontaine will have some time off before returning to action Wednesday, Sept. 2, when it travels to Benjamin Logan.
Urbana 4, Bellefontaine 1 (girls)
The Urbana girls soccer team defeated Bellefontaine 4-1 Monday night.
Lola Rice led the Hillclimbers with three goals, while Marleigh Long added another goal.
Addi Hegyi played a major role in the Urbana attack, recording four assists in the victory.
Benjamin Logan 8, North Union 2 (girls)
Benjamin Logan opened its season in impressive fashion Tuesday night, defeating North Union 8-2.
The Wildcats struck first just two minutes into the match, but the Lady Raiders quickly responded and took control. Benjamin Logan led 5-1 at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half.
Daylin Varner led the Raiders with four goals.
Ella Stoodt added a goal and three assists, tying a school record for assists in a game. Paislee Rodenberger and Brooklyn Smedley each scored a goal and an assist.
Lucy Johns also found the back of the net, while Kiera Clapsaddle contributed an assist.
The victory marked the Raiders’ first game of the season, while North Union fell to 0-3.
Benjamin Logan will return to action Wednesday night in a makeup game at Kenton. The girls are scheduled to play at 5 p.m., with the boys’ match to follow.
Indian Lake 2, Northwestern 0 (girls)
The Indian Lake Lady Lakers are off to a great start this season, improving to 2-0 after a physical and hard-fought win over Northwestern.
Brylee Roseburrough and Bre Wisener were the goal scorers for Indian Lake.
The Lady Lakers return to action Monday, August 31, at home against Kenton Ridge. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
