WL-S stuns #1 team in the state; Riverside falls in tournament

The West Liberty-Salem Tigers upset the #1 team in the Division III girls Friday night as they beat Miami East 37-30 on 98.3 WPKO.

The Tigers game plan worked to perfection as they forced the tall and long Vikings to shoot from the outside and even though WL-S was outsized they grabbed the rebounds.

These two teams met in the regular season back on January 29, as Miami East beat the Tigers 35-24.

Miami East entered Friday night’s game with a perfect record of 23-0.

The Tigers scoring was led by Ava Astorino’s 11 points while Bailey Poppe added 9 and Lily Weaver 8.

WL-S improves their record to 21-4 on the season and will play next Saturday, March 2, at Springfield High School.

They will play the winner of Cincinnati Country Day and Cincinnati Seven Hills who square off on Monday night.

In boys tournament play Friday Riverside fell to Newton 54-39.

The Indians jumped on the Pirates early 18-6 and never let Riverside get any closer than 10 the rest of the game.

Quinn Peters led Newton with 19 points and Luke Cornett finished with 15.

Newton shot 14-26 from the free-throw line.

Riverside was paced by Dominik Stotler who had 16.

The Pirates finish the season 10-13.
