The only thing hotter than the temperatures on Sunday were the West Liberty-Salem bats. The Tigers 12U swept a doubleheader at West Jefferson by scores of 16-6 and 11-4.
The Tigers outhit the Golden Gloves 30-10 over 12 innings. Greyson Leichty, Harrison Sutherin and Carter Underwood all finished 4 for 4 at the plate in the Game 1 victory, driving in 9 of the Tigers’ 16 runs and crossing the plate a combined 11 times between the three of them. Sutherin homered in his second straight game, a no-doubter to dead center to stake his team to a 6-1 lead. That’s all the runs Sutherin, the starting pitcher, would need as he spread out 5 hits and 5 runs over the first 5 innings. Sutherin struck out 7 and walked just 1 batter on the day.
The hot Tiger bats picked up right where they left off in Game 2. The first 5 batters in the WL-S lineup had 2 hits apiece, including another blast over the fence from Caizen Anders. Anders tallied 4 hits and 5 runs on the afternoon. Michael Beard collected 2 more hits in Game 2, finishing with 6 RBIs on the afternoon. Jace Horn added a base hit in each game, and Bentley Deam and Tyler Leas rounded out the WL-S offense with a pair of base knocks. Carter Underwood battled the heat on the mound in Game 2, striking out a 10 Golden Gloves over 5 innings, a season-high for a Tiger pitcher this season. Underwood scattered just 4 hits, 2 walks and 1 earned run in the win.
The Tigers return home on Tuesday night to take on the Bellefontaine Chieftains 12U at 6PM at LEI Field.
