Regional Track: Riverside’s Brooks wins discus; Chief’s Clary advances to State Meet; WL-S girls prelim results

The West Liberty-Salem girls track and field team competed in day 1 of the D3 Regionals Prelims on Wednesday at Troy Memorial Stadium.

The 4×800 was run as a final.

Lady Tigers Arianna Weaver, Gwen McCullough, Isla Leichty, and Mariska Smith placed 10th overall with a new relay PR of 10:22.26.

Also competing was:

  • The 4×200 relay of Tori Douthwaite, Gwen McCullough, Hattie Jacobs, and Chloe Griffith just missed qualifying for finals with a time of 1:50.04 in 9th place.
  • Hattie Jacobs placed 11th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.16.

Qualifying for Finals on Friday are: (top 4 places move on to State)

  • 100m hurdles: Hattie Jacobs (16.66) seeded 8th
  • 100m dash: Chloe Griffith (12.49) seeded 2nd
  • 4×100: Tori Douthwaite, Hattie Jacobs, Ella Albers, Chloe Griffith (51.25) seeded 6th
  • 200m dash: Chloe Griffith (26.35) seeded 7th
  • 800m run (Arianna Weaver) and 3200m run (Isla Leichty) will run on Friday, while Elise Longshore and Tori Douthwaite pole vault.

The Lady Tigers will continue competition on Friday at Troy Memorial Stadium.

The top 4 placers move on to the D3 State Track Meet at Jesse Owens.

At the Boys D3 Regionals, Riverside’s Travis Brooks took gold and set a new school record in the process in discus with an incredible throw of 151’9”. He will compete in the State Meet next weekend in Columbus.

Brooks will return to the Regional Meet on Friday to compete in shot put.

For D1 boys track and field regionals at Huber Heights, Bellefontaine’s Ayden Clary tied for second in discus with a personal record throw of 163’6″.

“I am very proud of Ayden,” said throws coach, Jim Robinson. “He competed at such a high level tonight. He is great to work with, and we are both excited about having one more week to work.”

He will compete at state on Saturday at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus.

In preliminary action, where the top 8 compete in Friday’s finals, Caleb Sechrest placed 6th in the 300 Hurdles with a time of 39.6 seconds.

“Far from a perfect race,” said sprints coach Cody Sigrist. “Not too bad for a freshman. He did what he had to do.  The moment was not too big for him.”

Hayden Maus will compete on Friday in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.
