Donald E. Moffitt
1936-2026

Donald E. Moffitt, 89, of West Liberty, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, February 1, 2026, at Mary Rutan Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Donald was born in Champaign County, Ohio, on May 21, 1936, to the late Howard K. and Alma (Sidders) Moffitt.

Donald married the love of his life, Jane Alcott, on June 7, 1958, and she survives. He is also survived by their children: Rick (Kathy) Moffitt of West Liberty, and Missy (Brad) Scott of Bellefontaine; 4 grandchildren: Michael (Josie) Moffitt, Renee Michelle (Jeremy) Moffitt-Greene, Bailey (Daulton) Mosbarger, and Turner Scott and loving friend Rayna; 6 great-grandchildren: Riley, Dylan, Makayla, Jace, Viktoria, and Molly; 7 bonus grandchildren: Braden, Audra, Chase, Nathaniel, Ezekiel, Isiah, and Delilah; and many dear cousins. His devotion to their happiness and well-being was evident in every action, and his memory will live on in the stories they share and the traditions he started.

Don worked for 33 years at Navistar and was a lifelong farmer. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, kindness, and a deep love for his family and the land he so faithfully tended. He was happiest in the seat of his New Holland 6150 tractor. His steadfast commitment to his fields was matched only by the care he showed to his family, friends, and neighbors. Don’s hands shaped not only the soil but also the hearts of those around him. His sense of humor and quick wit were as infectious as his work ethic. His gentle teasing and playful spirit brought joy to everyone he met.

Don was an avid sports fan, an enthusiastic supporter of the Buckeyes, Reds, and Green Bay Packers. He played an instrumental role in the creation of the West Liberty Tigers Boosters and faithfully attended the girls’ and boys’ basketball games, as recently as the 2024 season. He loved playing golf and spent many summers on the Liberty Hills Golf Course, where he once proudly hit a hole in one. Don enjoyed Quarter Midget Racing and was instrumental in bringing the sport to West Liberty. He was inducted into the West Liberty Quarter Midget Hall of Fame in 2010.

In addition to his love of the West Liberty Tigers, Don was a strong supporter of the West Liberty community. He was a member of the West Liberty United Church of Christ and served as a Liberty Township Trustee.

Don’s spirit will endure in the fields he cultivated, the lives he touched, and the countless memories he created. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May he rest in peace, his hands forever gentle on the earth he loved.

Pastor Karen Griswold will officiate Donald’s funeral service on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 11 am at the West Liberty United Church of Christ, 212 W. Newell St., West Liberty. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 5-7 pm at the church and from 10 to 11 am on Friday prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.
