Gary R. Carnes, 67, of Bellefontaine, passed away Saturday morning, April 25, 2026, at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Columbus.
Gary was born in Bellefontaine on June 24, 1958, to the late Richard Everett “Dick” Carnes and Madelene M. (Titus) Carnes. He married Marilyn A. Overly on March 17, 1979, in Bellefontaine, and she preceded him in death on January 30, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Larry Flora.
Gary is survived by two children: Bradley (Jen) Carnes of Ridgeway, Courtney (T.J.) Yoder of DeGraff; 6 grandchildren: Joshua and Preston Carnes, Bentley Flahie, Hayden, Savannah, and Mac Yoder; a sister, Pamela Flora of West Liberty; his fiancé, Nancy Burrey of Bellefontaine; and his mother-in-law, Audry Overly of Bellefontaine.
Gary worked for the Bellefontaine Police Department as a patrol officer and dispatcher for nearly 10 years, then went to work for the city in vehicle maintenance for another 20 years, before retiring in 2016. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, shooting sporting clays, hunting, and camping. He also filled his time tinkering with many different projects, including knives and leatherwork. Gary was a former member of the Logan County Pheasants Forever. He loved his grandchildren and spending time with them. Gary’s orneriness and shenanigans will be missed by many people.
Friends may call on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 5-8 pm at Eichholtz & Daring Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Bellefontaine. Pastor Jessica Dolan will officiate Gary’s funeral on Wednesday, April 29, at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
