George “Buzz” Paul Stanfel, 85, of Urbana, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, in the Springfield Masonic Community.
Buzz was born on May 13, 1940, in Canton, IL, to the late George Andrew and Ann Francis (Matkovich) Stanfel.
Buzz loved the outdoors and spent many of his best days fishing, hunting, and working on home projects. He enjoyed staying busy, fixing things, and lending a hand whenever someone needed help.
He also had a passion for basketball, both playing and watching. A devoted Boston Celtics fan, he rarely missed a game, and he shared that same love of the game with countless kids during the many years he spent coaching at St. Bernard’s.
Buzz is survived by his children, Thomas (Kelly Desmarais) Stanfel and Patricia (Jeffrey) Jackson; grandchildren, Austin and Madison Hayes, Rachel Desmarais, Joel (Brittany) Jackson, Brandon (Brooke) Jackson, Brock Jackson; as well as 5 great-grandchildren.
Buzz is preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Louise (Kennedy) Stanfel, and his parents.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Ohio.
A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM in the funeral home with Father Kevin LeMell officiating.
Burial will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana.
