Kay Moffitt
1939-2026

Kay Moffitt, 86, a lifelong resident of Champaign County, passed away unexpectedly in her home on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Kay was born on November 21, 1939, in Bellefontaine. She graduated from Concord High School in 1957, having previously attended St. Paris Schools. She had great friends from both communities. She then went on to earn an associate’s degree from Clark State University.

Kay became a mother early and raised 2 boys (both of whom were a challenge!) through their younger years, then went to work in the Agriculture Industry at Rosewood Grain. She served a few years with Cunocar Accounting Service before finding her true career path, professional love, and passion: Deputy Sheriff for the Champaign County Sheriff's Department. During a nearly 3-decade career, she attained the rank of Sergeant and served with sheriffs, many deputies, and a number of county employees. The department became her extended family. She became known simply as "Mom" or "Deputy Mom" to a generation of law enforcement professionals. She was proud to wear that uniform. After retirement, she served a short time with the Urbana Police Department.

In addition to this rich professional life, she was a devoted farm wife and assisted wherever possible with her husband, Ronnie Moffitt, and her father Ernie Moore's crop and livestock farm operation. She was a doting mother to her boys' and their 4-H and FFA projects, including their show ring pursuits at the Champaign County Fair. She enjoyed traveling to Ohio's many points of interest with her girlfriends and nieces. She loved OSU sports, especially football. For many years, she enjoyed winters in Florida with her special friend, Jerry Powell.

Family time was very precious to Kay. Her special nieces and nephews, Sue Gentis, Carol Bates, David Wilson, and Debbie Moffitt, were among her best friends.

Her two sons' families were her greatest joy; sons, Chris Moffitt of DeGraff, and Brad Moffitt (Karen) of Radnor; grandchildren, Julia Moffitt (Skyler Lotz) of Sidney, Aaron Moffitt (Clarissa) of St. Paris, Drew Kirby (Laurie) of Ostrander, Cameron Kirby (Alexis) of Rio Grande, and Colton Garrison (Madison) of Radnor. Kay was very proud to have 11 great-grandchildren. She had 16 nieces and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband of 45 years, Ronnie Moffitt; her parents, Ernie and Cleo Barnes Moore of St. Paris; brother, Max Moore (Betty) of Urbana; and sister, Mabel (Dean) Wilson of Urbana.

Kay's life can be summed up in one word: Service. She was an unselfish Mother, Grandmother, aunt, friend, peer, and even a helpful service provider to strangers, giving of herself wherever she sensed a need. Thank you to all who enriched her life and allowed her to enrich theirs.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 PM on Monday, June 29, 2026, in VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Ohio.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, in the funeral home with Pastor Frank Kampel officiating.
