1949-2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen Douglas Hanger, who passed away on 10/27/2026 at the age of 76 at Cedar Haven Nursing Home in Lebanon, PA.
Born on 11/02/1949, raised in Eris, Ohio, Stephen was the beloved son of the late Edward and Lillian (Long) Hanger. On April 28, 2000, he married Darryl L. Mueller, who preceded him in death in 2018. Throughout his life, Stephen was known for his hard work ethic, supporting his family, his love for the Lutheran Church in Russel’s Point, Ohio, and his love for his grandchildren.
Stephen graduated from Graham High School and went on to serve in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971 as a telecommunications officer, and retired from Honda of America Mfg., Inc. on 01/31/2014. Among his greatest joys were his family, radio, guns, his pet cats, going to the gun range, bowling, and golfing. Some of his favorite memories were taking his son to see the Cincinnati Reds play at Riverfront, gifting his son with his first guitar, and going to Nevada for state bowling tournaments with his wife, Darryl Hanger. Stephen also enjoyed playing chess. Chess was a family game where Stephen was taught by his father and later passed that down to Joe. Joe has now taught his three kids how to play and enjoys the game as much as his father did.
He is survived by son Joseph (Ericka) Hanger; grandchildren, Kaylyn Hanger, Harrison Hanger, Jackson Hanger; sister Becky Hanger, nephew Jason (Maria) Hanger, great nephew and niece Gabriel, Isabel; sister Susan Outram, niece Patricia Outram, nephew Christopher (Leah) Outram, great nieces Riley, Madison, nephew Stephen (Donielle) Outram, great nieces Adalyn and Emmalyn, niece Deborah (Jason) Eastman, great nephew and niece Matthew, Samantha, nephew Nicholas (Stefanie) Outram, great nieces Kierstin, Kaylie, Katelyn, Makayla, Eian; brother-in-law Jamie Mueller, sister-in-law Tami (Skip) Mueller, nephew JP Heilman, great nephew Colton Heilman, step-son Don (Allison) Watkins, step-grandchildren Bryant and Taylor; stepson Dave Watkins, step-grandchildren Alana, Lilyan, Briton and Blain; stepson Dan (Nicole) Watkins, who will forever cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his father Edward Hanger, mother Lillian Hanger, wife Darryl Hanger, and brother James Hanger.
Those who knew Stephen will remember him for his hard work, his humor, his love for his family, and storytelling. Stephen was amazing at telling his own stories of experiences in Vietnam and experiences he’s had throughout his life. He had a great ability to always make you laugh through any type of story.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2026 at 1: 00 p.m. at Jennings Farley & Seeley Funeral Home & Crematory. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery – West Liberty following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Galilee Lutheran Church, 301 Lincoln Blvd, Russells Point, OH 43348, or the Logan County Cancer Society, C/O Mary Rutan Foundation, 205 Palmer Ave., Bellefontaine, OH 43311.
