Area boys’ track and field athletes turned in strong performances Saturday at multiple OHSAA regional meets, highlighted by regional championships from Benjamin Logan’s Carter Daniels and Mechanicsburg’s Beckett Negley. Several area athletes secured automatic state qualifications by finishing among the top five in their events, while others earned at-large bids after placing sixth through eighth.

OHSAA Division III Regional – Piqua

Indian Lake Lakers

Indian Lake was led by a pair of senior standouts who will continue their seasons at the state championships.

Christopher Timms delivered one of the area’s top field-event performances of the weekend, earning a runner-up finish in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 55-9.75. The mark secured an automatic state qualification and capped an impressive postseason run for the senior thrower.

Gavin Henry also punched his ticket to the state meet in the 110-meter hurdles. Competing against one of the strongest hurdle fields in the region, Henry crossed the finish line fifth in 15.10 to claim the final automatic qualifying spot.

The Lakers also received a regional appearance from junior Carter Barnett in the long jump. Barnett finished 15th overall with a leap of 18-3.5 after advancing through district competition to reach the regional stage.

Indian Lake will send both Timms and Henry to the state championships as the Lakers conclude another successful spring season.

Benjamin Logan Raiders

Benjamin Logan’s postseason success continued behind senior pole vaulter Carter Daniels, who once again proved why he is among the state’s elite.

Daniels captured the Division III regional championship in the pole vault by clearing a personal-best 16 feet even. The regional title adds to an already decorated season for Daniels, who has consistently rewritten record books throughout the spring.

His winning vault not only secured an automatic state berth but also established him as one of the top contenders entering next week’s state championships.

Daniels was the lone Raider competing at the regional meet and made the most of his opportunity, bringing home a regional championship for Benjamin Logan.

Urbana Hillclimbers

Urbana’s regional contingent was led by senior distance runner Vincent Lightle, who earned a return trip to the state meet.

Lightle competed in the 3200 meters and delivered a personal-best performance, crossing the finish line sixth in 9:34.42. While just outside the automatic qualifying spots, the time was strong enough to secure an at-large state berth and extend his season.

Earlier in the meet, Lightle also anchored Urbana’s 4×800 relay team. Joining Zachary Nutt, Brian Chamberlain, and Pryce Bass, the Hillclimbers finished 10th overall with a time of 8:31.65 against a deep regional field.

In the field events, sophomore Crew Forson continued his breakout season in the shot put. Forson recorded a personal-best throw of 50-4 to finish eighth overall. His performance earned an at-large state berth and gives Urbana another representative at the state championships.

The Hillclimbers will now be represented at state by both Lightle and Forson after strong regional performances from the senior-junior duo.

Graham Falcons

Graham’s Sullivan Uhl capped off an outstanding junior season by earning a state berth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Competing in a highly competitive regional final, Uhl crossed the finish line seventh in 41.23. His finish placed him among the at-large state qualifiers and secured a trip to the state championships.

Uhl has been one of the area’s most consistent hurdlers throughout the season and continued that trend during the postseason, advancing from districts and ultimately earning a place among the state’s best.

The Falcons will send Uhl to Columbus as their lone state qualifier.

OHSAA Division V Regional – Cuyahoga Heights

Mechanicsburg Indians – Tied for 3rd Place (44 points)

Mechanicsburg produced one of the strongest regional performances of any area team, tying for third in the team standings with 44 points and qualifying athletes in multiple events for the state meet.

Beckett Negley led the way with a regional championship in the 3200 meters. The senior distance standout pulled away from the field to win in a personal-best 9:16.27. Earlier in the meet, Negley also secured an automatic state berth in the 1600 meters with a runner-up finish in 4:18.80.

Austin Haynes turned in a tremendous all-around regional performance. Haynes qualified for state in both hurdle events, placing second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.13 and second again in the 300-meter hurdles in 41.05.

Haynes also competed in the high jump, clearing 6-0 to finish eighth and earn an at-large state berth, giving him three state-qualifying performances from the regional meet.

Oliver Smith added another automatic state qualification by placing fifth in the pole vault after clearing 12-4.

Mechanicsburg’s field-event success continued with Mark Clyburn, who earned a state berth in the long jump. The junior recorded a personal-best leap of 20-10 to finish fourth and automatically qualify for state.

Additional performances came from Josh Titus, who placed 12th in the high jump at 5-10, and Connor Shultz, who finished 10th in the pole vault at 10-6. Shultz also competed in the 400-meter dash preliminaries and placed 14th in 54.29.

The Indians’ 4×200 relay team of Tevin Mitchell, Connor Shultz, Mark Clyburn, and Austin Haynes narrowly missed advancing to the finals, placing ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:35.82.

With multiple state qualifiers across several disciplines, Mechanicsburg enters the state meet with one of the strongest local contingents.

OHSAA Division V Regional – Chillicothe

Calvary Christian Spartans

Calvary Christian enjoyed a successful regional meet and will send multiple entries to the state championships.

Senior John Gaertner led the Spartans by earning an automatic state berth in the 800 meters. Gaertner placed fourth overall and recorded a personal-best time of 1:58.68 to secure his spot among the state’s top middle-distance runners.

Gaertner also played a major role in Calvary Christian’s relay success.

The Spartans’ 4×800 relay team of Aydan Knox, Benaiah Soma, Brett Gilldow, and Gaertner finished sixth in 8:25.57. Their performance earned one of the available at-large state bids and extended the season for the relay squad.

Calvary Christian also turned in a strong effort in the 4×400 relay. Brett Gilldow, John Gaertner, Elias Peterson, and Aydan Knox combined to place sixth in 3:32.75, putting themselves in position for at-large state consideration.

The Spartans will now await final confirmation of statewide at-large selections while preparing for what could be a strong showing at the OHSAA State Championships.
