OHSAA District Semifinals
Mechanicsburg 5, Cardington-Lincoln 2
The Mechanicsburg Indians opened tournament play with a 5-2 district semifinal victory over the Cardington-Lincoln Pirates behind strong pitching and an early offensive burst.
Crew Lafary was sharp from the start, striking out the first two batters he faced in a quick opening inning. The Burg offense then immediately backed him up with a three-run first.
Lafary led off the inning after being hit by a pitch, stole second, and moved to third on a perfectly placed bunt single from Eli Wilson. Wilson later stole second, and after an intentional walk to Conner Eyink loaded the bases, Hank Huffman lifted a sacrifice fly to right for the game’s first run. A few batters later, Liam O’Laughlin lined a two-run single into right to push the lead to 3-0.
Cardington-Lincoln answered with a run in the second after two hit batters and a pair of singles loaded the bases. However, the Pirates tried to score a second run on the play, and Colt Salyers fired a strike from center field to catcher Eyink to cut the runner down at the plate and preserve a 3-1 lead.
Mechanicsburg added another run in the third. Drew Lawhorn was hit by a pitch, advanced on a balk and wild pitch, then scored on a groundout by Salyers to make it 4-1.
The Pirates continued to threaten throughout the middle innings, but Lafary repeatedly worked out of trouble. Cardington-Lincoln cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth after a pair of singles and a Burg error allowed a run to score.
Lafary exited in the sixth after allowing a leadoff single and hitting a batter. He finished with 5.1 innings of work, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out seven.
Eyink entered in relief and escaped a major jam after loading the bases with one out, getting a popup and lineout to end the inning.
Mechanicsburg then grabbed an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Avery Foss singled with one out, and courtesy runner Ethan Hodge later scored all the way from first on three consecutive wild pitches to make it 5-2.
The Pirates loaded the bases again in the seventh, but Eyink stayed composed and struck out the final two batters of the game to secure the win.
O’Laughlin led the Indians offensively with a two-run single, while Huffman collected two hits and an RBI. Wilson and Foss each added a hit, and Salyers drove in the other run.
Mechanicsburg improves to 20-3 and advances to the district championship game Thursday against Liberty Union.
Anna 6, Indian Lake 5
The Indian Lake Lakers saw their season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion, falling 6-5 to Anna on a walk-off single in the district semifinals.
Indian Lake put the leadoff runner aboard in the first when Nixon Lillard singled, but the inning ended quietly before Anna struck for two runs in the bottom half.
The Rockets used two singles to put runners on the corners, then executed a sacrifice bunt to score the opening run. Later in the inning, a throwing error by the catcher allowed another run to cross for a 2-0 lead.
Chance Persinger doubled to lead off the second and Lane Kipker was hit by a pitch, but the Lakers stranded both runners after back-to-back strikeouts.
Anna added two more runs in the third. Two singles again placed runners on the corners before another sacrifice bunt plated a run, and a double to center extended the lead to 4-0.
Indian Lake answered in the fourth. Aaron Rapp singled, Persinger was hit by a pitch, and Kipker singled to load the bases with nobody out. Mack Jarvis was then hit by a pitch to force in the Lakers’ first run, and another run scored on an error during a pickoff attempt to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Jackson Snipes came up with a big defensive sequence in the bottom half, throwing home on a bunt attempt to cut down a runner at the plate before ending the inning with a strikeout.
The Lakers tied the game in the fifth. Cooper Hall walked, Brady Golliday reached on a dropped popup, and Rapp drilled an RBI double to center to make it 4-3. Later in the inning, Dawson Stevenson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the tying run.
Snipes followed with a quick scoreless fifth, but Anna regained the lead in the sixth after a leadoff single eventually came around to score on an RBI single to right field.
Indian Lake rallied one last time in the seventh. After two outs, Snipes was hit by a pitch and Grant Wickline drew a walk. Reed Strayer then hit a ground ball that resulted in an error by the second baseman, allowing Rush Hurley to score the tying run from second.
Lane Kipker entered in relief in the bottom of the seventh looking to send the game to extras, but after a leadoff walk and two intentional walks loaded the bases, Anna delivered a walk-off single to center field for the 6-5 victory.
Snipes pitched six strong innings for the Lakers, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out nine. Kipker recorded one strikeout in relief before the walk-off hit ended the game.
Rapp led Indian Lake offensively with two hits and an RBI, while Jarvis and Stevenson also drove in runs. Lillard, Golliday, Persinger, and Kipker each added a hit.
Indian Lake closes the season with an 11-15 record.
