AES Ohio Warns Customers About Scam

AES Ohio is warning customers about a growing scam involving identity theft and fraudulent payment schemes.

Customers have reported receiving calls from scammers pretending to be from AES Ohio, threatening to disconnect their electric service unless immediate payment information is provided.

These scammers are using advanced tactics, such as making AES Ohio’s phone number appear on the caller ID, even though the call is not actually from the company.

AES Ohio reminds customers of the proper procedures for handling billing and payment requests:

  • If AES Ohio calls you, the representative will have specific, accurate information about your account and billing.
  • AES Ohio employees or contractors who visit your home or business will always carry an official AES Ohio identification badge.
  • The company does not require customers to use a specific payment method. AES Ohio offers a variety of options so that customers can choose what works best for them.
  • Be especially cautious if someone asks for payment through prepaid debit cards (like “Greendot”) or Bitcoin, a form of cryptocurrency.
  • AES Ohio also advises customers to avoid providing personal information or making payments unless they are sure they are speaking to an actual AES Ohio representative.
  • For your safety, AES Ohio encourages customers to make payments in person only at authorized payment agents.

If you receive a suspicious call, AES Ohio encourages you to verify it by calling their customer service at 800-433-8500 for residential customers or 800-253-5801 for businesses.

If you think you’ve been targeted by a scam, immediately contact your local police department’s non-emergency number to report it.

AES Ohio is working with law enforcement to address this issue, which is affecting utilities nationwide.
