UPDATED 10:58 a.m.

Firefighters from multiple departments battled a barn fire in Champaign County on Saturday morning, with crews working to contain both the structure fire and a nearby field that also caught fire.

Crews were called around 11:30 a.m. to the 4300 block of Kite Road on reports of a structure fire. Emergency scanner traffic indicated the pig barn was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

German Township Fire Department served as the primary responding agency. Mutual aid was requested from JSP, Pike Township, and Christiansburg, with additional grass trucks dispatched after flames spread to a nearby field.

The dispatcher confirmed that animals were inside the barn at the time of the fire. While it remains unclear if any adult hogs were lost, firefighters with JSP were able to rescue a number of piglets from a red attached garage on the property. No injuries to emergency personnel were reported, and officials said no nearby buildings were at risk.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
