Tuesday night marked the third week of the Behind the Badge Sheriff’s Academy, a unique program designed to educate community members about the various resources and techniques employed by the sheriff’s office in crime fighting and investigation.

The four-hour session was packed with information, featuring insights into the specialized teams within the department. Attendees learned about the narcotics unit, which includes the highly trained K9 Tega, along with a deputy skilled in administering polygraph tests and another focused on analyzing cell phone records.

One of the highlights of the evening was a live demonstration by K9 Tega and her handler, Deputy Josh Core. The duo showcased their teamwork and the critical role K9 units play in drug detection and criminal apprehension.

Participants also enjoyed a tour of the sheriff’s evidence room, where they were introduced to artifacts from past cases. Among the items was a poignant piece of history: a gun used in a shooting incident during the 1960s, providing a tangible connection to the long-standing efforts of the sheriff’s office to maintain community safety.

This engaging program aims to foster a greater understanding between the sheriff’s office and the community, offering residents a firsthand look at the tools and personnel dedicated to keeping the area safe.
