A Benjamin Logan High School teacher is being recognized at the state level for her impact in the classroom and dedication to student success.
Nelly Andrade-Hughes, a Spanish teacher at Benjamin Logan High School, has been named the recipient of the Leona Glenn Award for Outstanding High School World Language Educator by the Ohio World Language Association.
She received the honor during the organization’s annual conference, where she was recognized for excellence in world language education and her commitment to student success. Andrade-Hughes was nominated by Teri Wiechart, the association’s membership chair and a retired educator from Delphos Jefferson High School.
Originally from Michoacán, Mexico, Andrade-Hughes has taught Spanish in Ohio since 2006 and joined the Benjamin Logan district in 2007. In addition to her classroom work, she is known for presenting and authoring acquisition-driven instructional strategies at the local, state, and national levels.
She also serves as an advisor for the school’s Spanish Club and Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, helping students extend their learning beyond the classroom.
Andrade-Hughes holds a master’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature and teaches College Credit Plus courses through the University of Findlay. She is also a certified National Geographic Educator.
Her impact has also been recognized nationally. She was recently named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars following a student nomination recognizing her dedication to excellence.
Colleague Kelsy Wermer-Hoy also praised Andrade-Hughes’ mentorship, saying, “As a first-year Spanish teacher, she took me under her wing, and honestly, I don’t know what I would have done without her or if I would even still be in education.”
“We are incredibly proud of Nelly and this well-deserved recognition,” said Sally Stolly, Director of Administrative Services. “Her passion for teaching and her ability to inspire students make a lasting impact both inside and outside the classroom.”
Benjamin Logan Local Schools is congratulating Andrade-Hughes on the achievement, calling it a reflection of her commitment to excellence in education.
