The Benjamin Logan High School Jazz Band recently made waves at the 2024 OMEA Professional Development Conference, solidifying its position as one of Ohio’s premier musical ensembles.
Their journey began with a rigorous “blind” audition process, where they secured a sought-after spot among over 30 ensembles, showcasing the finest musical talent in the state on February 2.
Mr. Myles Bowers, the band director at Benjamin Logan High School, played a pivotal role in this achievement.
As a key player and former clinician in the third-largest U.S. music conference, he and his ensemble had the opportunity to access cutting-edge insights in music education.
In a moment of special honor, the BLHS Jazz Band world premiered a jazz arrangement by Mike Kamuf of ‘West End Blues,’ a classic made famous by Joe “King” Oliver and a young Louis Armstrong.
Mike Kamuf, a nationally recognized composer/arranger for Alfred Publications, contributed his expertise to create a unique musical experience.
The performance took place at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Columbus, and the event commenced with opening remarks from Deb Johnson, Benjamin Logan School Board Vice-President.
The Jazz Band’s contributions extended beyond the premiere, as they took the stage as the demo band for “All You Need Is One Note: How Limitations Can Inspire Creativity” by Zakk Jones, who holds the position of Jazz Chair at Capital University.
Myles Bowers, expressing immense pride in his students’ accomplishments, stated, “Your accomplishments speak for themselves, and I’m excited that you can be part of an event that recognizes Ohio’s BEST music ensembles!” This acknowledgment underscores the excellence and dedication of the Benjamin Logan High School Jazz Band in the realm of music education and performance.
