Bone fragments discovered at a construction site outside Russells Point last week have been confirmed to be human remains.
According to Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds, property owner Dave Duff promptly notified authorities after finding the fragments.
Around 3:10 p.m. Thursday, August 6, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a report from an individual who believed they had discovered human remains.
Detectives and deputies responded to the property and requested the Logan County Coroner’s Office. The bone fragments were collected and removed from the property for examination by investigators.
Photographs of the fragments were sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, where an anthropologist determined the bones were ancient.
The fragments were then taken to The Ohio State University for additional analysis. Anthropologists from BCI and Ohio State determined the remains were in poor condition, dated to prehistoric times, and were of American origin. The remains likely represent prehistoric Native American remains.
Because the remains were found on private property, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office says they will be returned to the Duff family so they can be given a proper burial.
Sheriff Dodds says there is no indication the remains are connected to any recent crime or missing person case.
