The Logan County Commissioners honored local veteran Jack Makemson Tuesday afternoon with an American flag.

Makemson is a Vietnam vet serving in the Army.  He was honorably discharged in 1968.

He received numerous awards for his service including the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Device 1960.

Commissioner Yoder presented the flag to Makemson.  The flag flew over the Logan County Courthouse in March of 2023.

Makemson spoke of his experience in Vietnam.  He was a machine gunner.  He recalled a night when his unit was being overrun by the enemy.  He talked about making the decision to leave the location he was in because he knew if he stayed he would die.  He and two other men were able to get to the river and swim to a safe camp.

Jack was injured in the fight.  He remembers being hit in the eye with a piece of metal.  He knew at the time he couldn’t see, but he didn’t know it would be a permanent loss of sight.

After being discharged in 1968, Jack returned to Logan County.  He got his college degree and entered the workforce.  After working a few years out of the county, he returned to be a counselor at Bellefontaine City Schools where he served for several years.

Commissioner Antram read the information about Jack and shared his personal relationship with him having worked together at Bellefontaine City Schools.

Commissioner Robinson led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jack thanked the commissioners for the recognition and acknowledged the Logan County Veterans Services for their work with local veterans.

Makemson lived in Bellefontaine for several years.  He and his wife Peggy currently reside in West Liberty.
