Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign and Logan Counties has received a $75,000 grant from FirstEnergy to help support hunger-relief efforts throughout the three-county service area.
The grant is part of FirstEnergy’s continued partnership with Second Harvest and comes alongside hands-on volunteer work by the company’s employees.
Recently, FirstEnergy employees spent time at Second Harvest helping pack food boxes for seniors. The volunteer effort gave employees an opportunity to work directly with the food bank and help prepare food that will be distributed to local seniors.
Jennifer Brunner, development director for Second Harvest Food Bank, said the food boxes can provide important support for seniors living on fixed incomes.
“When you’re packing a senior box, it’s worth stopping for a moment to think about whose kitchen that food will end up in. For someone trying to stretch a fixed income through the end of the month, those groceries can take a real worry off their plate.”
Brunner said FirstEnergy’s employees not only volunteered their time but also followed that effort with the $75,000 financial contribution.
“FirstEnergy’s team spent time doing that work alongside us and then presented a $75,000 grant to help us keep feeding our neighbors. That’s a meaningful day here, and one we don’t take for granted.”
The grant will support Second Harvest’s ongoing efforts to provide dependable access to food for people who need assistance.
Second Harvest distributes food through its network of partner agencies and also provides direct food assistance programs. The organization serves individuals and families throughout Clark, Champaign and Logan counties.
The partnership with FirstEnergy combines financial support with employee volunteer service, helping Second Harvest continue its work of getting food into the hands of local residents.
