Indian Lake High School has embraced 16-year-old Helena Griem from Germany this fall, but her exchange experience is coming to a close.
Helena arrived in the United States on August 1st as part of a group from the Education First organization, having previously traveled in the U.S. with her family.
“I want to expand my horizons. For me, self-growth is a big thing. I’m kind of independent for the first time, being so far away from my parents,” Helena shares.
From the start, Helena immersed herself in school life by joining the ILHS Volleyball Team before classes even began. An athlete, guitar player, and lover of music and art, she quickly made friends and fit seamlessly into the student body. “They’ve been very open, welcoming, and interested in my culture, asking questions,” she explains.
Helena has actively participated in school events, cheering on the Lakers at football games and riding on the Volleyball Team float during the Indian Lake Community Homecoming Parade. “I love the community in the school. It’s a small school compared to my school at home near Frankfort. I love the school spirit! That’s what I wanted and expected. It’s great!”
She also attended the Homecoming Dance, enjoying a night of fun that differed greatly from formal dances in her German school. “I got ready with the girls and it was so fun!”
In addition to her activities, Helena has shared her culture by teaching the ILHS Chorale how to present the Christmas classic “Silent Night” in German for their Fall Choir Concert.
As her time at ILHS draws to a close, Helena faces a new chapter. Her host moms, India and Kelsey, are relocating to Marysville, prompting mixed feelings for Helena. “I’m quite nervous about it because I don’t know anyone there… But I think the people will be welcoming.”
Looking ahead, Helena hopes to travel with her host moms during the winter months, with plans to visit Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
However, she won’t be saying goodbye to ILHS just yet. Helena plans to return for the Choir Concert on December 2nd and aims to keep in touch with the many friends she’s made.
