Motorists and residents along South High Street in Urbana should plan for temporary traffic changes as a pavement preservation project gets underway this week.
A contractor hired by the City of Urbana, Pavement Technology Inc., will be applying a preservative sealant to the asphalt on South High Street on Wednesday, June 17, weather permitting. The treatment is designed to extend the life of the roadway.
Residents in affected areas will receive notification through informational flyers or door hangers, and “No Parking” signs will be posted before work begins.
The sealant application is scheduled to start around 8 a.m. Wednesday. During the process, certain blocks of South High Street will be closed to through traffic. While the sealant will not be applied to concrete intersections, motorists should expect workers and equipment to be present throughout the project area.
After the sealant is applied, crews will spread sand over the roadway while the surface cures. City officials note that humidity can affect curing times, meaning portions of the street may reopen at different times.
On Thursday, June 18, crews will return to sweep excess sand from the roadway. Drivers can expect lane shifts around sweeping equipment and possible intermittent closures along South High Street.
Officials encourage motorists to allow extra travel time and use caution when driving through the work zone. The project remains weather dependent, and any schedule changes will be announced if necessary.
