Extra hour of sleep, extra time for fire safety

Ohioans will gain an extra hour of sleep this weekend as daylight saving time comes to an end.

Clocks will fall back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1, returning to standard time.

Residents who manually change their clocks should turn them back one hour before going to bed Saturday night.

Most cellphones and electronic devices will update automatically.

The time change means more daylight in the mornings but earlier sunsets in the evenings.

The American Red Cross is using the time change as a reminder for residents to check their home’s fire safety equipment.

The organization encourages everyone to test their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries when needed.

Red Cross officials recommend having smoke alarms on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.

Smoke alarms should also be replaced when they reach 10 years old.

Residents are also encouraged to test alarms monthly, develop a household fire escape plan, and practice getting out of the home at least twice a year.

Other fire safety reminders include never leaving candles, fireplaces, or heating appliances unattended, staying in the kitchen while cooking, and keeping flammable items away from stoves and space heaters.

Daylight saving time will return Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks move forward one hour.
