The grandstand was packed with cheering families as one of the Champaign County Fair’s most anticipated traditions returned on Sunday night—the annual Livestock Scramble.
Young fair exhibitors took to the arena for the Pig Scramble and Calf Scramble, racing against one another in a test of speed, determination and a little bit of luck.
The action began with the Pig Scramble, with competitors divided into two heats. Participants raced after the pigs, with those who successfully caught one earning the opportunity to take home the animal and raise it for a future fair project.
The Pig Scramble featured two heats, with competitors racing to catch the loose pigs.
Heat One
Those who successfully caught a pig included:
- Maylynn Bacher – Graham
- Brooke Cohn – Graham
- Ashlee VonDeylen – West Liberty-Salem
- Addison Corry – Graham
- Lilly Swank – Graham
- Ryleigh Rausch – Mechanicsburg
Other Heat One competitors:

Heat Two
Those who successfully caught a pig included:

The evening continued with the Calf Scramble, where competitors chased after calves and worked to get them under control.

2nd – Case Salyers – Mechanicsburg, 180 pounds
3rd – Brigg Rice – Graham, 190 pounds
4th – Mason Key – Graham, 125 pounds
Other calf scramble participants included:

- Jayson Hoewischer – Mechanicsburg, 130 pounds
The Livestock Scramble remains a crowd favorite at the Champaign County Fair, giving young exhibitors a chance to compete in front of the grandstand while beginning the work of raising livestock for future fair projects.
