Ohio families struggling with summer utility costs can apply for assistance through the Summer Crisis Program.
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and Bridges Community Action are offering the program through September 30.
The program can help eligible households pay their electric bill, purchase an air conditioner or fan, or make repairs to a central air conditioning system.
Households may qualify if they have a disconnect notice, have had their electric service shut off, are trying to establish new electric service, need air conditioning for a medical reason, or have someone in the household who is at least 60 years old or has a documented medical condition.
Qualifying medical conditions can include lung disease, COPD, and asthma.
To qualify, household income generally must be at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines for families of up to seven people. For families of eight or more, the limit is 60 percent of the state median income.
For a family of four, the annual income limit is $57,750.
More than 55,000 Ohio households received help through the program last year, totaling about $12.4 million in benefits.
People interested in applying must schedule an appointment with Bridges Community Action by calling 937-404-9203.
Applicants should bring their most recent energy bills, proof of income for household members, proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency, and proof of disability or medical need for cooling assistance, if applicable.
People enrolled in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan Plus, or PIPP, may also qualify if they meet the program requirements.
