As the Bellefontaine Chieftains prepare for the 2024 football season, they face the exciting challenge of building on one of the most successful years in the program’s history. With the new season set to begin this Friday in Sidney, the Chieftains are focused on continuing their winning ways.

A major asset for Bellefontaine is the return of Tavien St. Clair, the five-star quarterback who topped national recruiting charts. St. Clair’s 2023 season was outstanding, with over 3,000 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and a 70% completion rate. His leadership will be crucial as the team integrates several new players and first-time starters into key roles.

The Chieftains will have to replace key offensive players from last season. Receivers Riley Neer and CJ Wilson, who combined for 182 receptions, over 2,600 yards, and 30 touchdowns, have graduated. Neer alone caught 113 passes, and Wilson added 69. With their departure, finding new playmakers will be essential. The team is looking to players like Centerville transfer Braylon Newcomb, Jacob Salyer, Spencer Stolly, and Kaiden Foulk to step up in the receiving corps.

In the backfield, Bellefontaine must also replace Chris Fogan, the team’s leading rusher with 1,289 yards and 18 touchdowns. The rushing attack will now rely on Carter Caudill and Caiden Snapp to carry the load.

The offensive line will see changes as well, with four key players needing to be replaced. Senior Brody Boy returns at center and will be vital in mentoring the new linemen and ensuring a smooth transition.

On defense, optimism is high with the return of leading tackler Jayden Temple. Newcomers like Newcomb in the defensive backfield and Riverside transfer Aiden Clary at defensive end are expected to enhance the unit’s athleticism and effectiveness.

Despite the challenges, Coach Jason Brown remains confident in his team. He has praised St. Clair’s preparation and dedication, noting that the entire program is motivated by his success and recent national recognition as the top recruit by Rivals. Brown is also encouraged by the team’s depth, culture, and work ethic, which he believes will be crucial for navigating the season.

With nearly 70 players on the roster, including 22 seniors, Bellefontaine has a strong foundation to address any early-season questions and build on their previous success.
