West Jefferson 4, Mechanicsburg 0

The Mechanicsburg Indians suffered their first loss of the season Monday night, falling 4-0 to West Jefferson in a showdown between two Division IV state contenders.

Mechanicsburg had chances early, putting runners on in each of the first three innings, but West Jefferson ace Brett Bogenrife repeatedly worked out of trouble. The Indians left runners stranded in the first, had two batters hit by pitch in the second with no runs to show for it, and saw a promising third inning end on a pickoff.

The game remained scoreless until the fifth, when West Jefferson broke through on a two-out RBI triple down the right-field line for a 1-0 lead.

The Roughriders then added insurance in the sixth, capitalizing on multiple Mechanicsburg errors to plate three more runs and stretch the advantage to 4-0.

Mechanicsburg did mount one last threat in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but a game-ending groundout sealed the shutout.

Crew Lafary and Conner Eyink recorded the only two hits for the Indians, while Bogenrife struck out 14 Mechanicsburg batters.

Mechanicsburg falls to 18-1 and will look to split the series with West Jefferson on Tuesday.

Triad 2, Northeastern 1

By: Gavyn Heitman, Student Reporter

Triad’s baseball team celebrated Senior Night on Monday with a 2-1 victory over Northeastern, honoring senior infielder and pitcher Jayden Blackburn before first pitch.

Blackburn was recognized in a pregame ceremony surrounded by family and friends. The senior is a four-year letterman in baseball and has also been a member of Triad’s basketball and golf programs.

Northeastern threatened early, opening the game with a walk and singles from Carter Spriggs and Jacoby Newman. Despite the early traffic, Triad’s defense came up with key outs, throwing runners out at second on both hits before JJ Roberts recorded a strikeout to end the inning.

Roberts carried his momentum to the plate in the bottom half of the first, leading off with a single before stealing second. However, Northeastern pitcher Rhett Lough settled in and kept the Cardinals off the board as the game remained scoreless after one.

Both offenses were quiet in the second inning as what quickly developed into a pitchers’ duel took shape.

Northeastern broke through in the top of the third after a string of singles put pressure on the Cardinals. Following a passed ball from Duncan Funderburgh, Lough stole home to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Roberts responded by recording another strikeout to limit the damage.

Triad nearly answered in the bottom half of the inning after Roberts delivered a two-out single and George Hartman drew a walk. Funderburgh then ripped a double to put pressure on the Jets, but Northeastern ended the threat by throwing Roberts out at home to preserve the lead.

Roberts continued to dominate on the mound in the fourth, striking out two more batters. Northeastern again threatened with a walk and a single from Levi Mefford, but Triad’s defense held firm to keep the deficit at one.

The Cardinals finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Blackburn collected his first hit of Senior Night with a single, followed by another base hit from Connor Hayes. After Alex May was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Waylin Holtzberry delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Northeastern escaped further damage with a double play to end the inning.

Triad kept the momentum in the fifth after Roberts posted another scoreless frame on the mound.

Offensively, the Cardinals took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Hartman reached with a single before Funderburgh stayed hot with his second double of the night. Ty Botkins then came through with an RBI single, bringing Hartman home for what proved to be the game-winning run and a 2-1 Triad advantage.

Northeastern was unable to generate offense over the final two innings as Roberts and the Triad defense shut the door. The Cardinals added pressure in the sixth with a single from Alfred Johnson and multiple walks, but the Jets escaped without allowing an insurance run.

In the seventh, Roberts capped off his strong outing with one final strikeout to secure the win, finishing with 10 strikeouts on the day.

Triad improves to 6-15 on the season behind a standout all-around performance from Roberts, who struck out 10 while adding two singles and a stolen base at the plate. Funderburgh also contributed with two doubles, while Botkins drove in the game-winning run.

For Northeastern, Lough turned in a strong performance despite the loss, striking out six while also recording a single and scoring the Jets’ lone run.

The two teams are set to meet again Tuesday in the second game of their back-to-back conference series, this time at Northeastern.

Indian Lake 3, Bellefontaine 2

The Indian Lake Lakers held off a late Bellefontaine rally Monday night, using a three-run first inning and a dominant pitching performance to earn a 3-2 CBC win.

Indian Lake struck immediately as Nixon Lillard led off with a single and later scored on a passed ball. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Mack Jarvis delivered a two-out bloop single to left that dropped in for two more runs and an early 3-0 lead.

That was all the support Jackson Snipes needed. The Laker starter was outstanding, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just three hits and two walks, striking out 10 Bellefontaine hitters. His biggest moment came in the fifth, when Bellefontaine put two runners on with one out, but Snipes induced back-to-back groundouts to escape the jam.

After the rocky first inning, Bellefontaine starter Sammy Kline settled in nicely, tossing a complete game and holding Indian Lake scoreless the rest of the way.

The Chiefs finally threatened in the seventh against reliever Brady Golliday. Aiden Smith singled and later scored on a Bellefontaine ground ball that was mishandled at third, allowing Zyler Huffman to reach and advance to third. Patrick Stolly followed with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the comeback ended when Sutton Daring lined out sharply to shortstop.

Cooper Hall led Indian Lake with two hits, while Jarvis drove in both runs. For Bellefontaine, Smith, Daring, Cayleb Overmann, and Nicholas Beair each had a hit.

Indian Lake improves to 9-11 and will travel to Graham on Tuesday. Bellefontaine falls to 9-12 and heads to Greenville on Tuesday.

Riverside 9, Houston 1

The Riverside Pirates rode a massive day from Cooper Crouch to a 9-1 win over Houston on Monday.

Crouch was unstoppable at the plate, finishing a perfect 5-for-5 with five RBIs, including multiple run-scoring hits throughout the night.

Riverside got on the board in the first after Brody Orsborne singled on the first pitch of the game and later scored on a Crouch RBI single. Another run scored later in the inning to make it 2-0.

The Pirates slowly built their lead, adding one in the fourth before breaking things open late. Crouch delivered a two-run double in the sixth as Riverside scored three runs, then added three more in the seventh behind a two-run double from David Gross and yet another RBI hit from Crouch.

On the mound, Syler Clark tossed 4.2 strong innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. Camden Shoe handled the final 2.1 innings in relief, allowing no runs and striking out three.

Orsborne had two hits and scored twice, while Gross added two RBIs.

Riverside improves to 15-5 and will travel to Miami East on Wednesday.

Fairbanks 3, West Liberty-Salem 0

The West Liberty-Salem Tigers were shut out Monday night, falling 3-0 to Fairbanks in a low-scoring non-conference battle.

The Tigers threatened immediately when Isaac Sertell led off the game with a double, but a double play quickly erased the opportunity.

Fairbanks took control in the second inning, scoring once on an RBI single and adding another on a wild pitch to build a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers added one more insurance run in the fourth after taking advantage of a walk, another baserunner, and a defensive miscue.

West Liberty-Salem’s best scoring chance came in the fifth, when Jeremiah Johnson singled and Braden Hershberger doubled to put two runners in scoring position, but both were stranded after back-to-back strikeouts.

Timmy Howells turned in a solid outing on the mound for the Tigers despite the loss.

Jeremiah Johnson led the offense with two hits, while Beckett Sullivan added a single and both Sertell and Hershberger doubled.

West Liberty-Salem drops to 13-9 and will get a rematch with Fairbanks on Tuesday.

London 10, Graham 0

The Graham Falcons struggled offensively Monday night in a 10-0 loss to London.

London took control early and never looked back, scoring throughout the contest and using a four-run inning highlighted by a two-run homer to create separation. The Red Raiders finished with 12 hits and also took advantage of four Graham errors.

Offense was hard to find for the Falcons, who managed just one hit all game — a single from Brody Jenkins.

Graham did create one opportunity in the fourth when its first two batters reached base, but both runners were stranded. The Falcons also drew three walks, two by Mateo Castelucci and one from Jack Traylor.

Graham falls to 5-17 and will host Indian Lake on Tuesday.
