Riverside High School’s Class of 2027 has repeated as Powderpuff football champions, winning the annual event for the second straight year.
The senior class defeated the juniors 21-0 in the varsity matchup Wednesday night, successfully defending the title it won last year when the students were juniors.
The evening began with a junior varsity matchup between the freshman and sophomore classes, which ended in a tie.
This year’s Powderpuff event was planned and operated from start to finish by students in Riverside’s Creative Events & Media class, taught by Mrs. Michelle Suman.
Students helped organize referees and an announcer, promoted the event throughout the school, sold class T-shirts and worked concessions and ticket sales during the event.
The project began during the first week of the 2026-27 school year, when Riverside’s media arts classes designed T-shirts for their respective grade levels. Students then voted on the designs that would represent each class throughout the school year, including during Powderpuff.
The winning designs were created by Olivia Hemsath for the freshman class, Eva Dodds for the sophomores, Molly Carman for the juniors and Kara Klingler for the seniors. Demi Gonzalez’s senior design finished closely behind and was selected for use by the referees and announcer.
Suman said the event gives students an opportunity to work together while learning how to plan and execute an event from beginning to end.
“I am very proud of my students who worked together to create a memorable event for the school. It teaches them how to create an event from start to finish. It was a fun night under the stadium lights.”
Creative Events & Media is a career-technical course at Riverside High School offered through Ohio Hi-Point Career Center’s satellite program.
Throughout the school year, students in the program help plan, promote and operate Riverside student events, including Powderpuff football, Jock Volleyball, the elementary Easter egg hunt and the spring 3v3 tournament.
The course gives students hands-on experience in event planning, marketing, design and media production.
