The Urbana High School cheerleading team made school history this past weekend, placing 6th in the nation at the UCA/NHSCCA National Cheer Competition in Orlando, Florida.

Competing against the top teams from across the country, the Hillclimbers delivered a standout performance that showcased their hard work, dedication, and team spirit.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this team,” said Coach Jenny Payne. “Their commitment to each other and to our program’s values—accountability, selflessness, and positivity—shined through in every practice and performance. Placing 6th at Nationals is an incredible accomplishment, and they’ve set a new standard for Urbana Cheer.”

The team’s journey to Nationals was fueled by countless hours of practice and strong support from the Urbana community.

Local businesses, families, and fans rallied behind the squad with fundraisers and messages of encouragement, making the trip possible.

Senior cheerleader Mya Mount says, “Going to Nationals was a very exciting moment for me, coming from such a small town you don’t always expect yourself to get to that spot but to do it back to back means even more. It is a wonderful experience and so many memories are made there and I’m glad I got to experience it with my teammates back to back before I graduate.”

Senior cheerleader Baley Smith reflected on the experience: “To me, Nationals was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I’ve always wanted to compete on a huge national floor, and to be able to have that opportunity two years in a row is amazing. From being 8th in the nation last year to becoming 6th this year makes me beyond proud of my team. We have worked so, so hard to get here, and I can’t wait to see what [the team] accomplish[es] next year! I will forever cherish these moments with them and will never forget the impact they have made in my life.”

Senior cheerleader Riley Smith added, “Being able to compete with these girls at Nationals was something I never thought I’d get the opportunity to do. Placing 6th might not have been the outcome we wanted but I’m so proud of us and how hard we worked to even get to Nationals and be nationally ranked! We represented Urbana and I will always hold a place for this team in my heart.”

The cheerleaders’ success has energized the program and inspired future teams to aim even higher.

Their achievement is a testament to the power of teamwork, perseverance, and Hillclimber pride.
