chieftain_emblem_photo_on_8-15-05.jpgAs featured on 1390 WBLL, the Bellefontaine varsity boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker at Kenton last night.

The Wildcats used a late basket to edge the Chiefs 50-49.

Bellefontaine took its first lead of the night when Brock Mitchell stole the ball at half court and hit a layup with :14 remaining to give the Chiefs a short-lived 49-48 advantage.

Kenton did not call a timeout and Michigan State commitment Garrick Sherman missed a ten-foot floater, but a tip-in by Mark Fackler with :03 remaining gave the Wildcats the win.

The Chiefs got off a left wing three at the buzzer, but the shot hit the left side of the rim. (Audio interview included.)

The Urbana University men's basketball team has fallen into a familiar pattern this season. Plagued by cold starts, the Blue Knights are growing accustomed to furious second half comeback bids that fall just short.

The story was the same last night as Urbana trailed host Mercyhurst College 41-17 after one half of play. The Blue Knights scored 14 straight points at the start of the second half to cut a 25-point deficit to 11, but the Lakers kept their distance and held on for a 72-58 win.

The Blue Knights shot 6-of-24 from the field and 4-of-9 from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes, before righting the ship in the second half. Mercyhurst shot 53.6% from the field in the decisive first half. The Lakers are 9-0 for just the second time in school history.

laker_logo.gifWest Liberty-Salem threw everything but the kitchen sink at Indian Lake Tuesday night, but the Lakers hung in the game and pulled off a last second comeback to beat the Tigers 59-58.  WLS took control early leading 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.  The Tigers used their outside game in the first half as leading scoring Nate Bratka sat most of the 1st and 2nd quarters with foul trouble.  Junior Jarred Merrick stepped up hitting four 3-pointers including an acrobatic shot at the end of the half to put the Tigers up 10 points at the break 32-22.  West Liberty-Salem hit six 3-point buckets in the first half.
