In Chinese astrology, 2008 is the year of the rat. Perhaps the ancient Chinese knew something when they picked the grimy rodent to represent a year that has been filled with tragedy, crime and severe weather locally. Additionally, the United Nations said that 2008 is the year of the potato; perhaps they had visions of the “spud”ering economy when they made their declaration.

Many of us are still cleaning up from Christmas, but don't just throw away all that cardboard and ripped paper from packages that were left under the tree. (Audio interview included.)
Coordinator for the Logan County Solid Waste District Alan Hale says the recycling centers through out the county will accept most of your Christmas trash.

The Mad River Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering babysitter training just after the New Year.
The Mad River Chapters's Babysitter's Training Program is open to girls and boys ages 11 through 15.
Participants learn the basics of first-aid, how to properly hold and feed a child, how to monitor safe play and to take emergency action when needed.

In these tough economic times, the Ohio Department of Insurance is offering some tips on lowering insurance costs which could save you and your family some green in 2009.
To decrease auto insurance rates, the ODI suggests maintaining a good driving record, as the number of accidents, citations, claims and tickets directly affect your premiums.
And call your provider and ask about eligible discounts for good grades for students, mature driver discounts and others.
To lower homeowners insurance install protective devices like a burglar alarm, smoke detectors, and deadbolt locks.

With the holidays, travel plans and cold temperatures, The American Red Cross reports blood donations are on the decline.
Already in our region blood donations have dipped 7 percent below what is needed and the univeral blood type, O-negative, is in need of an immediate boost.
The Red Cross is holding several blood drives just after the first of the year.
