Two high-profile political leaders made a stop in Logan County Tuesday afternoon to learn more about the challenges facing rural health care providers.
Dr. Mehmet Oz and Ohio US Senator Jon Husted toured Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine, meeting with hospital leaders and staff to discuss the Rural Healthcare Transformation Fund and how it could better support rural hospitals across Ohio.
The Rural Healthcare Transformation Fund is designed to help rural hospitals modernize services, expand access to care, and remain financially stable as many smaller hospitals across the country continue facing economic pressure.
Hospital employees said the visit was unannounced to many staff members, giving Dr. Oz and Senator Husted an opportunity to hear directly from workers about the day-to-day realities of providing care in a rural community.
During the tour, the pair spoke with staff members about the challenges hospitals face, including staffing shortages, rising costs, access to specialty care, and maintaining services for smaller communities.
Dr. Oz and Senator Husted also asked employees what it is like working “in the trenches” of rural health care and what support rural providers need most moving forward.
Mary Rutan Health President and CEO Chad Ross said the visit highlighted the importance of investing in rural hospitals and ensuring facilities like Mary Rutan can continue serving their communities.
Ross also discussed what the Rural Healthcare Transformation Fund could mean for hospitals across rural Ohio:
