Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools is making back-to-school costs more affordable for families by eliminating most school fees and providing all classroom supplies for the 2026-27 academic year.
District officials announced the changes Friday, saying local tax dollars have been reallocated to enhance classroom instruction while reducing expenses for families.
Under the new plan, no new school fees will be charged to elementary and middle school students during the 2026-27 school year, although families will still be responsible for any outstanding balances from previous years. High school students will instead pay a reduced flat fee of $50.
The district is also eliminating traditional school supply lists. Mechanicsburg Schools will provide all required classroom and instructional supplies, leaving families responsible only for personal items such as a backpack, lunch box and daily snacks, depending on individual classroom guidelines.
“Our priority is ensuring that every student enters the classroom equipped for success without placing unnecessary financial strain on our families,” Superintendent Dr. Danielle Prohaska said.
Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer Scott Maruniak said reallocating tax dollars toward instructional support and classroom supplies is intended to improve educational equity while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
District officials said the changes reflect Mechanicsburg Schools’ ongoing commitment to supporting students and families while keeping learning a top priority.
