At the latest meeting of the Mechanicsburg Board of Education, board members recognized Mechanicsburg High School for once again earning designation as a Purple Star School, an honor awarded by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to schools demonstrating a strong commitment to students and families connected to the military.
Mechanicsburg has held Purple Star status since 2019. Schools must renew the designation every three years for each building individually. This year, 839 schools across Ohio hold the designation.
The Purple Star program is designed to identify and support students impacted by military service through parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, or uncles. School officials reported continued growth in student participation, with 69 military-connected students at the elementary level, 34 in middle school, and 73 at the high school, including 25 active participants.
This year, six Mechanicsburg seniors will receive Purple Star graduation cords, while one student will be awarded a $250 scholarship to continue their education.
School officials also announced the creation of a commemorative display in the high school commons, where graduating Purple Star seniors will leave handprints beneath the phrase, “Hand in Hand, Standing Behind Our Military Families.”
Throughout the year, Mechanicsburg hosts several events supporting military families and veterans, including Veterans Day activities, military appreciation football and basketball games, family breakfasts, and a spirit week recognizing April as the Month of the Military Child.
As part of those efforts, the school also adopted a veteran from the Mechanicsburg American Legion during February, providing gifts and inviting him to speak at a high school Purple Star meeting about his military experience.
During the board meeting, officials also shared a Certificate of Appreciation presented to the high school from the United States Central Command at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar after students and staff assembled and sent a care package and cards to an active-duty parent stationed overseas. Also included were two military coins.

The board also accepted an anonymous $250 donation to fund the Purple Star Scholarship.
Superintendent Danielle Porhaska talks about what it means to be recognized with the Purple Star and shares thoughts about the upcoming graduating class of 2026.
In other business, board members approved several staffing and coaching recommendations for the 2026-27 school year, including Kail Rosenbeck as high school fall cheer coach and Kurt Forrest as head football coach.
The board also approved one-year coaching contracts for Kelly Weber (girls golf), Kari Hodgkin (volleyball), and Caleb Westfall (boys golf), along with contracts for Bryna Adams as long-term building substitute and Tiffany Eckstein as building aide.
Additionally, the board accepted resignations from Erika Kieffer and Greg Saylor.
The next board of education meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 8th.
